Condoms Need Lube

Posted by GLYDE & UNION's resident sexperts, Natasha & Jeremy of AllTheFeels on 4th May 2022

One of the most common complaints people have as to why they don’t use condoms more consistently is that they can be dry, so intercourse doesn't feel as good. The small amount of lubricant applied to condoms is not meant to substitute one’s natural juices, it used to keep the rubber moist and make unrolling easy. But there are a variety of things you can do to make sure condoms aren't dulling the sensation. The easiest and best way to make safe sex good sex is to use plenty of body-friendly lube.

For some reason, a lot of straight folks aren’t so familiar with the benefits of using a high-quality personal lubricant, but everyone who's sexually active (even with solo-play) should keep a variety of lubes on hand, ESPECIALLY a water-based or silicone lube that’s safe to use with condoms, for the following reasons:

  • Intimate lubricant supplements the loss of lube provided by precum when you're using a condom
  • It makes condoms less likely to break which can lead to pregnancy or spread of STIs
  • Reducing friction also means the condom isn't going to get constricted around the penis when penetrating, which can kill your erection
  • More lube is more pleasurable for women and means they're less likely to get small and painful micro-tears from dry friction

Needing to use lube doesn't mean she's not turned on. She could be dehydrated, nervous, or changes in hormones can affect her ability to get wet on some occasions. Rarely is dryness a result of lack of attraction or interest, so check your pride/ego at the door.

When choosing which personal lube to buy, make sure it's water-based, silicone or hybrid (a mixture of the two), since those are the best to use with condoms. Oil-based lube can eat away at the latex in condoms, so that is a bad idea. Substituting lotion for lube is never a good idea as lotion is not intended for use inside the body, just on the surface of the skin.

Intimate wellness products have evolved and expanded as a personal care category with a wide variety of interesting options to make your exploration extremely fun. If you want to take sensation to the next level, use a lube combined with an intimate enhancer. Safe sex can feel amazing with the right products.
